Gothenburg Lanvetter Airport
The Gothenburg Lanvetter Airport is Sweden’s 2nd largest airport after Stockholm-Arlanda providing services to 5.2 million passengers in 2014. Gothenburg is also Sweden’s 2nd largest city and is situated by the Kattegat, a rather shallow sea on the western coast.
Gothenburg has earned an international reputation for pioneering and applying new technology. In 2013, Forbes Magazine ranked Gothenburg as one of the World’s 15 Most Inventive Cities.
As an early adopter, the Gothenburg Airport became one of the first international hubs in the world to offer a biophilic installation to weary travelers. With 75% of its flights heading to or returning from international destinations, people with long travel itineraries visit the airport’s restrooms to refresh themselves.
While travelers wash their hands or splash their face with water after a long flight or before their next connection, greeting them directly overhead is a large 6’ X 32’ Luminous SkyCeiling that creates the illusion of overhead skies, which triggers an automatic “relaxation response” in what ordinarily are very confining spaces.
With a nod to the nature of the facility, a passenger jet's thin, high altitude streak can be seen suspended across the virtual skylight. Even a few minutes of biophilic engagement will provide multiple restorative benefits and mitigate the stressful and fatigue-laden experience of modern air travel.
